  • West Central School of Ag Garden alumni and all others are invited to help plant the WCSA Memorial Garden on Friday, May 27, from 9 a.m. until noon. Bring tools and enthusiasm. Cookies and lemonade will be provided. Contact Carla Riley at rileycj@morris.umn.edu or 320-589-6394 for more information.
  • The Morris Area Agriculture Students will have their Greenhouse Open for the public to purchase hanging baskets, plants, garden vegetables and flowers!  The Greenhouse is located next to the High School softball fields by the south parking lot.  Come and check it out Tuesday-Friday May 31-June 3 from 7:30-8:30 AM and 3:30-6:30 PM.
  • Summer Fun in the Garden, a series of family gardening programs at WCROC Horticulture Garden in Morris begins Wednesday June 1.  At 6pm a light optional supper will be served, and at 7pm Bernie Angus will speak on Water Gardening and Kristin Koch will share activities with the children.  The program is free; there is a small fee for the grilled light supper.  Other Wednesday dates in this series of events will be June 15, June 29, July 13, and Aug. 10.
  • Anyone who has a used or worn United States flag may drop it off at the American Legion during business hours, and they will be sure to dispose of it with respect during a flag retirement ceremony.

  • The Courage Cottage will be having a garage sale fundraiser Thursday, May 19th & Friday, May 20th, from 3:00-7:00 pm at 307 South Street. Bigger items will be sold by process of a silent auction; including:  washer/dryer, stove and range, refrigerator, TV, 2 dining room tables, coffee table, end table, futon, 2 entertainment centers, white hutch, recliners, several office chairs, and much more.

  • Volunteers are needed at Calvary Cemetery in Morris to do maintenance tonight, May 19 at 6 p.m. All ages are urged to help prepare the cemetery for Memorial Day.

  • Herman/Norcross Sportsman’s Club Walleye Tournament is June 18th on Upper Pomme de Terre Lake ~ Elbow Lake, MN.  50 Boat Maximum. For Entry Form and more information, please contact Nick Lehman – (320) 815-6853.

  • Van Horn’s House Fire Benefit will be held on Saturday, May 21 at the Alberta Community Center and Park. A barbecue picnic lunch (free will offering) will be served from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. A petting zoo and pony rides will be available. A silent auction will be held from 11:00 a.m.–2 p.m. Silent auction and money donations can be dropped off at United Farmers & Merchants State Bank, P.O. Box 380, Morris, MN 56267.

  • Miss Morris, Miss Midwest, and pageant committee members will be bussing tables as part of a fundraiser to be held at the Pizza Ranch on Monday, May 23, from 5-8:00 p.m. Tips and a portion of sales will be donated to the Miss Morris/Miss Midwest Scholarship Program.

  • An Open House will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stevens EMS offices at 209 South Highway 9 in Morris on Monday, May 23. In recognition and thanks for the commitment of all EMS personnel, we’ll be grilling hot dogs, have activities and balloons for the kids, and displays setup on our ‘How To Save A Life’ program. PioneerLink will be showcasing their Personal Emergency Response units and we are working on possibly being able to offer car seat checks as well. Tours of the ambulances and facility will be offered, along with blood pressure checks and information on our upcoming classes.  At 7:00 our Topics in EMS education series will offer a presentation on Cardiology and Cardiac Emergencies by Alfredo Altamirano, PA-C, MPAS of Prairie Ridge Medical Center. All are invited, there is no charge to attend, and CEUs will be given.   • A Brown Bag Lunch Event will be held at the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance (PRCA) gallery at 630 Atlantic Ave. in Morris on Thursday, May 26 from 12:10–12:50 p.m. The PRCA will be providing a sweet treat. J.O. Salls will be discussing his book First Year and talking about public school and its challenges. This event is free and all are welcome. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the PRCA.

  • Check out the equipment that the Regional Fitness Center (RFC) rents out. Equipment includes: frisbee golf, canoes/kayaks, trailer, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and more! Call 589-6485 for more information.

  • The First Prairie Pioneer Days button drawing will be on Friday, May 13. Buttons are available at Jerry’s U-save, Willie’s Super Valu, Bremer, Bank of the West, RiverWood, and UF&MSB. Weekly winners will be announced on the Chamber Facebook page, MorrisMNChamber.org and http://prairiepioneerdays.areavoices.com/

  • Businesses along Hwy 9 are OPEN during the road construction. Jerry’s U-Save can be accessed from Columbia Avenue, and Valu Ford and Morris Auto Plaza can be accessed from Elm Street.

  • Hancock will be having City Wide Garage Sales on Friday, May 13.

  • Beginning Saturday, May 14, the Regional Fitness Center will have new weekend hours: Saturdays from 8am – 6pm, and Sundays from 10am – 6pm.

  • The National Association of Letter Carriers will be holding a Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 14. You can help by bagging non-perishable food items and leaving them at your mailbox for pickup and delivery to the Stevens County Food Shelf.

  • The Pomme de Terre Garden Club Plant sale will be held Saturday, May 14th at East Side Park from 9:00-11:00 a.m.  Plants include chrysanthemums and perennials from member’s gardens.

  • More than 300 seniors will receive Bachelor of Arts degrees during the 48th annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14. Faculty, staff, family, and friends will gather on the mall to recognize the accomplishments of the graduates. The celebration begins with division receptions from 11-12:30, and the ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m.

  • Community Education is doing a Pizza Ranch fundraiser event on Monday, May 16th.  Community Ed staff will be bussing tables for tips with a percentage of sales between 5-8 pm also donated. Money raised will be used to help support CE youth programs.

  • On Tuesday, May 17, Morris Sons of Norway Lodge will be celebrating Syttende Mai by hosting a Scandinavian luncheon at First Lutheran Church, Morris from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.  The luncheon will consist of three kinds of open-face sandwiches, rommegrot, rice cream, pickled herring, pickled beets, krumkake, almond pound cake, coffee and lemonade.  Tickets for the luncheon are $7.

  • A Stevens County Dental Outreach Clinic For Kids will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at the Morris Elementary School Early Childhood Room, 153 South Columbia Ave. Appointments must be made in advance by calling 1-877-998-2218 between 8:30 -4:00, Monday through Friday.

  • The First Friends of the NRA Dinner & Auction will be held Thursday, May 19 at Old #1 Southside. Gun and Auction preview at 5:30, dinner at 7:00. Tickets are available at www.friendsofnra.org or by calling Heidi at 320-589-2548. Only 200 tickets will be sold.

  • AARP Driver Safety Classes (formerly 55 Alive) will be held Wednesday, May 25 & Thursday, May 26 at 5:30. This is an 8 hour first time class taught in Spanish. A minimum of 10 participants registered is required for each class. All classes are held at the Morris Senior Center. To register, call 320-208-6600.

  • Are you a singer?  Maybe you excel in dance?  If so, those or any other talents will place you in the spotlight during one of four June evenings at Eastside Park in Morris during the Morris Kiwanis Club’s Annual Talent Contest.  Entry forms are available at http://morriskiwanis.org/, and Willies Super Valu, Sarlettes Music, and John’s Total Entertainment.   • S.C.M.C. has purchased the house at 307 South Street to have land for future expansion.  If you would like to purchase the house, garage and/or fence to be moved at buyer’s expense, please submit your offer by Monday, May 16th to the Courage Cottage. For questions or tours of house, call 585-5133. All proceeds will go to the Courage Cottage!

  • West Wind Village will be holding their 1st Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on Saturday, July 9 at 11 a.m. at the Pomme de Terre Golf Course. Tournament will be 4 person teams, scramble format. The tournament will raise funds for the remodeling and decorating of their three bathing suites with a new in floor scale.   • A class on “Doing Business Online” will be offered in Hancock on Tuesday, May 24th from 6 -9 pm. at the Hancock School computer lab. This free class is a continuation of the classes being offered in Stevens County through the Minnesota Intelligent Rural Communities Program. Ryan Pesch, U of M Extension Educator will present the class.  This class is open to everyone in Stevens County, but registration is required and the class is limited to 20.   • The Morris Sun Tribune has launched a new mobile web site and users of Android devices as well as iPhone, iTouch or iPad devices will benefit from the new experience.   The layout conforms to the width of the device in either landscape or portrait orientation.  The new site can be accessed at mobile.morrissuntribune.com.

  • Attend the Cinco de Mayo Celebration, Community Meal, and Fundraiser on Thursday, May 5, at the Morris American Legion. Tickets are $5 at the door, and include an authentic Mexican meal (4:30-8:00), raffle prizes, games for kids, music, & a karaoke contest (from 8-9:00). A silent auction will be offered. Tickets may be purchased at RiverWood Bank.

  • On Saturday, May 7, a bicycle repair workshop will be held for members of the campus and community to make minor repairs to their own bikes. From 12-3 p.m. at the Recycling building in the North parking lot, a local technician will be on hand to help attendees and provide tire tubes, chains, and brakes to those in need of replacement parts. Come ready to get your hands dirty, because it will be a great hands-on learning experience. Free pizza will be served at the workshop at 1:30 p.m.
  • Pizza Ranch will be closed Monday May 9th and Tuesday May 10th all day both days to finish off the remodel, adding new flooring and the new buffets. Congratulations to them on the beautiful remodel!
  • Experience the reawakening of the Garden at the West Central Research and Outreach Center by joining us for a sunrise walk at 8:00 AM, Saturday, May 7.  Ron Wienhold will point out and explain the more subtle signs of spring as we walk around the horticulture garden and surrounding areas.  Meet in the Pomme de Terre Overlook parking area. $6.00 fee includes a light breakfast. Registration preferred by May 4th, walk-ins are welcome. Register by calling 589-1711. 

 

  • Someplace Safe will be holding a Dad’s Belgian Waffles fundraiser on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Old #1 Southside. All you can eat including: sausage, orange juice, coffee & 10 different toppings. $8 for adults, $6 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 & under. Sponsored in part by Old #1, St. Mary’s Church, Assumption Church and Willie’s Super Valu. Advance tickets will save you $1 and are being sold at Bremer Bank and all 3 branches of United Farmers and Merchants.

  • The Annual Golf Fundraiser for the Morris Area Chamber will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Pomme de Terre Golf Course. Registration is from 9:00-10:00, followed by a shotgun start to the 9 Hole Tournament. Four person teams will play for a variety of great prizes, including first and last place, door prizes, and raffles. Golfers can register individually or as teams. The cost is $55 per golfer, or $220 per team, and includes 9 holes of golf, cart fees, games and lunch. Teams must be registered by Tuesday, May 10.   • Support the Courage Cottage With A Spring Clean Up! Call Rinkenberger Recycling @ 585-5253 to pick up large or small quantities of your scrap metal, appliances, vehicle batteries, machinery, old cars, and just about anything that is metal.  Small pieces can be dropped off behind the Courage Cottage in the receptacle provided. Make sure to tell them that you would like your proceeds to be donated to the Courage Cottage. Fundraiser runs now through August. Thank you for your support!
  • Lost: A black hills gold earring, about a week ago, somewhere between Rentz Agency office, Pizza Ranch and the Library. Call 589-1242 if you found it.
