  • FREE! Bring the whole family to the 41st annual Horticulture Night at the U of M West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) in Morris, MN, Thursday, July 28th from 5-9 pm. There is something for everyone:  garden tours, horticulture demonstrations, educational displays, kids’ activities; plus food, fun, and entertainment. For details: wcroc.cfans.umn.edu.

  • The Trifecta: ADHD, Autism, and Bipolar, by Dr. Michael Wolff, Clinical Neuropsychologist. Thursday, July 28th, 5:45-7:45pm, at Morris Area Elementary Concert Hall. The seminar will review information about how these conditions are differentiated from each other, the possible influence these can have for children, adolescents, adults and their families and discuss current knowledge regarding treatment options. Free will offering taken for related support and learning organizations.
  • The monthly AmVets meeting will be held Monday, August 1 at 8:00 at the American Legion. Anyone who has served in any position is welcome to attend.
  • The Irondale Marching Knights (Irondale High School, New Brighton, MN) invite the Morris community to a free performance on Friday, July 29, 8:30 PM at Big Cat Stadium, UMM campus. We are spending a week on campus working on our show for this fall, and wish to show off a little of what we’ve learned. Please come to see us and bring your friends!

  • MAHS Student Council is organizing 25 book bags for needy students. Items needed: pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, color pencils, notebooks, folders, highlighters, pencil pouches, locker magnets, book bags (textbooks size), advanced calculators ($10 – $20), and surprise treats.  Drop donations at MAHS or contact Peg Rinkenberger for pick up (320-287-1697, rink@fedtel.net) by Aug. 10.

  • The Cyrus Community Market operates each Wed., Aug. 3 – Sept. 28,
    5 – 7pm on the front lawn of the Cyrus School.  Each Wednesday evening a non- profit organization will serve a meal for $5.00/person or $20/family.  On Aug. 3, the Cyrus Community Club will serve hot dogs, hamburgers and a side dish.  Come help support local growers and non-profits!
  • Help Bremer Bank employees raise funds for the Minot flood victimsPopcorn is available for a free will donation all week in the lobby.  Checks can be made payable to the Minot Red Cross.  (Bremer employees are also Going Blue for Minot by paying to wearing jeans on Thursday and Friday.) 
  • Fundraiser for Morris Life-Care Pregnancy Center. Look for adorable baby displays in local businesses and contribute to your favorite.  Contest ends Aug. 13.  The Center is a non-profit providing practical assistance and compassionate care for women facing crisis or unplanned pregnancies, and their families and friends.

  • The Morris Public Library will host the Brian Richards Kids Who Read R Cool Magic Show on Thursday, July 21 at 3:30 p.m. at the Library.

 

  • The Morris Public Library will host Friday Flicks on Friday, July 22 at 2 p.m. at the Library. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Contact the Library for the movie title.

  • The Morris Public Library will wrap up its summer reading program on Monday, July 25 from 6:30–7:30 p.m. by playing Book Bingo. Come play bingo and win books as prizes!

 

  • Join the Morris Community Boat Float on Saturday, July 23, at 1:00. We will meet at Pomme de Park and enjoy  a 1 1/2 hour canoe trip down the Pomme de Terre River from 455th Ave. (north of Hwy. 28)  back to the Pomme de Terre Park. After the Boat Float there will be refreshments and summer games such as bocce, bean bag toss, and more. The event is free. Must be 12+ years old. A short lesson will be offered for those who have not canoed before. Register at egerx007@morris.umn.edu. Please specify if you will need a life jacket, canoe, or paddles when registering.

  • Thrivent will be serving free ice cream sundaes in the lot next to Keeper’s on Crazy Days, July 27. They will serve from 10:00 until gone. Door prizes—including Chamber Cash–will also be offered.

  • Help fight cancer with Relay for Life of Stevens County.  At Pomme de Terre Park from 5 PM Friday, July 15, to 6 AM Saturday.  See details at www.relayforlife.org/stevenscountymn.
  • A Free Hazardous Waste Collection will be held on Wednesday, July 20 at the Stevens County Highway Garage from 10 AM–2 PM. Examples of acceptable items: paints, stains, varnish, aerosol products, garden pesticides, automotive fluids, household cleaners & rechargeable batteries. Items not accepted: business wastes, farm chemicals, asbestos, explosives or fluorescent bulbs. Contact Stevens County Environmental Services for more information at (320) 208-6558.
  • The next Book Bunch date at the Morris Public Library will be Thursday, July 21 from 12–1 p.m. at the Library for grades 4th & up. Bring your own lunch.   • Do you have an Adorable BABY?   Here’s your chance to show them off in our Adorable Baby contest; featured at the Stevens County Fair.  This fundraiser promotes the most beautiful babies and the Morris Life Care Pregnancy Center. The contest is for babies from birth to age 2 years old. All those interested must enter no later than, July 20th, 2011.   • The Kiwanis Talent Show Contest Finals will be held Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m. in the band shell at East Side Park. The contest is preceded by a supper served by the Kiwanis Club for $6. The menu includes: roast beef or BBQ pork sandwich, beans, chips, pop and ice cream sandwich. An extra sandwich can be purchased for $3.

    Ice Cream Social, Friday, July 8, 1-2 p.m., Morris Public Library, hosted by West Central Initiative. Come for the book sale, stay for free ice cream treats!

 

  • The 5th Annual Horizontal Grandeur prairie art exhibition opens Friday, July 8 at the Stevens County Historical Museum.  The artist reception at 6:30-8:00 PM, Friday. Special weekend hours: 11-4 Saturday, 11-2 Sunday.  Special behind the scenes tours.  Also see Sharing Spaces: Building a Community that showcases Morris Public Library, Stevens County Armory and the Museum now housed in the historic Carnegie Library building. Summer hours: M-F 9-4:30 until Labor Day.  Admission is free.  See www.stevenshistorymuseum.com for more details.

  • The Morris Public Library will host George of the Juggle on Thursday, July 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Library. Comedy magic and juggling for kids and families is sponsored by the Morris Friends of the Library Association.
