  • Morris Area Schools’ Open House: Thursday, August 25, 2011. Elementary grades from 5:00-6:30 pm; high school from 5:30-7:00 pm.  Meet the staff, tour the facilities, and have questions answered. Parents can pay fees (including lunch), review their child’s schedule, meet teachers, and update their Instant Alert information. Tours will show recent updates and improvements in the vocational department. West Central Cattlemen will be grilling 5:00-7:00 pm.  Surplus equipment will be auctioned off at 7:30 pm.   • Valu Ford & Chrysler is sponsoring a Drive One 4UR School event at the Morris Area High School.  During this event every test drive of a NEW Ford vehicle earns the Morris High School $20, up to a total of $6,000!  This event will take place Thursday, August 25th, 4–7:30 pm in the school parking lot.  No obligation, no purchase necessary, just a great chance for your local school to earn some extra cash.
     
  • Welcome Weekend activities open to all on the Campus Mall:
    Friday, Aug. 26, 9:30 PM, movie “Wet Hot American Summer”; and
    Saturday, Aug. 27, 5-8 PM, Concert on the Mall.
  • West Central Junior Sportsman Day – FREE to ages 9-17.  Aug. 27, 9AM – 2PM.  8:30 registration at the 9-F Sportsman Club (along Hwy 59 by-pass, 1 mile south of Hwy. 28).  Signed waiver from parent or guardian is required for shooting sport participation.  Lots of PRIZES!

  • Green Energy Tour of the biomass plant and wind turbines on Sunday, Aug. 28.  Tour leaves the UMM Student Center Information Center at 1PM.

  • Donnelly Threshing Bee, Aug. 27-28. $7 admission button ($6 in advance). Age 15 and younger FREE. Softball, antiques tractors, bicycles and horses on Sat.; classic cars, parade and more horses on Sunday!

  • Pizza Ranch is hosting a benefit for Feed My Starving Children on Monday, Aug. 29, from 11AM-8PM.  All tips and 25% of sales will be donated to this worthy cause (see next bullet point)!

  • A Feed My Starving Children Mobile Packing Event will be held Aug. 30 – Sept. 1 at the Morris Area Elementary School Cafeteria.  Donations and volunteers are needed to pack 225,000 meals for children in Haiti.  At 19 cents per meal, it’s a bargain price, but 225,000 meals do add up!  Go to http://volunteer.fmsc.org/Register/mobilepack/event.aspx?event=1108-41 to see open times needing volunteers or to donate, or call 320-589-2808.
  • The new, award-winning French film, Of Gods and Men (with English subtitles), will be shown FREE at 7 PM on Wed., Aug. 31, on the UMM campus in the Student Center’s Edson Auditorium.

  • Thursday Afternoon Faculty Seminar (TAFS) by Peter Wyckoff, Morris association professor of biology: “A Stressful Time to be a Tree: Climate Change, Invasive Earthworms, and European Buckthorn Impact Forest Dynamics in West Central Minnesota”.  Given on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 4:30 PM in HFA 6, UMM Campus. 
  • Adair, Della & Friends are back! This year’s show, “Seasonal Songs Etc.”, will be presented Thursday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m. at the Morris Area Elementary Concert Hall. The show features two-piano music, instrumentalists, vocal numbers and audience sing-along. Buy $6 tickets (12 and under free) at John’s Total Entertainment, Keeper’s Floral, By-Lo in Hancock or Lynn’s Café in Starbuck.  Proceeds go to “Adair Horgen Music Scholarship Fund” for music students.

  • MORRIS SENIOR CENTER is sponsoring a bus trip to the Minnesota State Fair on Thursday, Sept. 1 (Senior Day).  Call 589-2951 for details and reservations.
  • Stevens EMS classes offer great ways for people to learn life-saving and leadership skills.  
    • First Responder class runs Sept. 7 – Oct. 5, meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30-10:30pm.  
    • EMT-Basic class runs Aug. 25 – mid-Dec., meets Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:30-10:30pm.

Local employment and volunteer opportunities are available upon class completion. Tuition reimbursement programs are available to qualified  individuals. Class highlights include a ‘hands on’ cardiology lab, visit to the cadaver lab at UMM, water rescue, high level rescue and a trip to Hennepin County Medical Center and the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport Fire Department!

  • UMM’s student improvisation troupe will perform on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 8 PM in the UMM Student Center’s Edson Auditorium.

  • Courage Cottage’s 10th annual 10K Run/Walk fundraiser is coming Sept. 10.  Participants are encouraged to get 10 pledges of $10 apiece.  Register by Sept. 1 to get a t-shirt.  Registration fee is $10 through Sept. 1, then $20.  For info call Kristi at 320-585-5134.
  • Morris welcomes the UMM students back to campus!  Join the fun at the annual Welcome Picnic and Expo, Sept. 8 at East Side Park.  Students and community members are welcome.  Serving 5-7PM.  Dinner is FREE, courtesy of local businesses and churches.  Donations accepted and appreciated.  Call 589-1242 to sign up for the Expo.  Participation in the Expo is free to Morris Area Chamber of Commerce members, and is for local area businesses and organizations only.

  • Chair giveaway to needy students!  Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has over 50 used-but-in-good-shape chairs to give.  A trailer will be parked at East Side Park during the Welcome Picnic and Expo, Sept. 8, 5-7PM.  First come, first served.

  • Dinner in the Garden, Sept. 8, at University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) Horticultural Display Gardens, Morris.  Celebrate the harvest from local farms, orchards and vineyards, and all the pleasures of the seasonable table.  Music provided by Dustin Retzlaff and UMM Jazz Ensemble.  Dinner at 6:00PM; local wine and cheese tasting begins at 5:30.  Advanced ticket purchase ($50/person) necessary.  Tickets available at the WCROC or Pomme de Terre Food Coop.  Proceeds contribute to the Horticultural Gardens.  Call 320-589-1711 for more info.

  • Enjoy the Stevens County Fair through Aug. 14, and don’t forget your traditional stop at the American Legion Beer Gardens!  Hours are Wednesday 6-10, Thurs. & Fri. 4-midnight, Sat. & Sun. noon-midnight.
  • The Morris Masonic Lodge has teamed with the Morris Police Department and Stevens County Sherriff’s Office to bring free digital KIDs ID fingerprinting to the Stevens County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2-6PM, in the Community Room of the Lee Community Center.
  • Fundraiser for Morris Life-Care Pregnancy Center. Look for adorable baby displays in local businesses and contribute to your favorite.  Contest ends Aug. 13.  The Center is a non-profit providing practical assistance and compassionate care for women facing crisis or unplanned pregnancies, and their families and friends.
  • Celebrating Morris Public Library’s 125 years of service, the Community Band will give a free concert on the library lawn Wednesday, August 17that 7 pm. Popcorn from Willie’s will be available. Everyone welcome!
  • Thursday, Aug. 189th Annual Field Day at North Central Soil Conservation Research Lab (809 Iowa Avenue). 9:30 Registration.  Exhibits on site.
