- SCAM ALERT! A telephone credit card fraudis hitting the Midwest hard now. A caller claiming to be from your credit card company’s Security or Fraud Department gives lots of valid information about you and your credit card, then gets you to give them the 3 or 4 character validation number on the back of your credit card. Then they charge your card and pocket the money. Credit card companies won’t ask for this information. Do not give any credit card numbers to someone calling you.
- Community organizations are invited to apply for AmeriCorps “Students in Service” (SIS) assistance. Local units of government, K-12 schools, or community-based organizations are eligible to apply for SIS assistance before the Oct. 7 deadline. SIS members can assist with services such as research, project administration, marketing, or with other needs of an organization. Projects may address issues such as senior housing, storefront design, healthcare research, program evaluation, document design, newsletter creation, economic analysis, Internet and web training, data analysis, downtown revitalization, and more. SIS requires students to devote 300 hours to their projects. Contact Jessica Beyer at 320-589-6451.
- The Regional Fitness Center will be hosting a Party in PinkTM event Saturday, October 8th from 11:00am to 12:30pm. Admission is an at will donation with 100% of our proceeds going towards Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Join us for an exhilarating dance-fitness workout that can only be Zumba Fitness and to honor our Breast Cancer survivors! Wear your best pink workout clothes to show your support!
- The Zion Lutheran Church Annual Fall Bazaar is Saturday, Oct. 8, 9am-2pm. Come for the Crafts, Bake Sale, White Elephant, and (new this year) Silent Auction. Enjoy awesome egg coffee, chicken noodle soup, pie and other goodies! Address: 315 So. Columbia Ave.
- Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale! Sunday, October 9 from 9:30-11:20 a.m. in the Assumption Church Basement. Proceeds will help send the St. Mary’s 6th grade class to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center for a week this winter.
- The Preacher and the Teacher share humor about growing up, working and family life in Minnesota. Admission is FREE at Faith Lutheran Church, 108 W 8th St., October 9at 6:30pm. Dessert served. Everyone welcome! Sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
- H. Glenn Penny, associate professor of history at the University of Iowa, will give the 27th annual O. Truman Driggs Distinguished Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall. Penny will discuss “On Passing: A ‘Redskin’ with Black Skin in Twentieth Century Germany.” The lecture is free and open to the public.
- The Morris Career and Technical Education Fair in conjunction with the MN Education Fair is coming Wednesday, Oct 12th in the High School Gym from 2-5 PM. Local Businesses are encouraged to join. This year 500 students from the schools around Morris will also be in attendance! If you are interested in recruiting for future workers they “would love to have you!” Please RSVP to Natasha Mortenson (nmortens@morris.k12.mn.us) by Monday Oct 10th if you plan to attend!
- “Gather in the Park” (East Side Park) 5-7pm on October 13 for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. FREE: music, food, child care and activities for kids. Speakers at 6pm. Sponsored by Someplace Safe.
- The Morris Sons of Norway will be hosting a “Krumkake Kick-off” on Thursday, October 13from 3-5:30 p.m. at the PRCA Art Gallery, 630 Atlantic Avenue, Morris. See the Scandinavian display, enjoy coffee and krumkake and learn about Scandinavian culture. Non-Norwegians are welcome!
- English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes NEED VOLUNTEERS due to overwhelming demand. Over 50 ESL students are signed up for English classes at UMM. We need volunteers to help with child care and to assist in the classrooms. No experience necessary!!! We need help Mondays 7-8:30pm, Thursdays 7-8:30pm and Saturdays 7-9:00am. Come strengthen the ties within our community.
- Child Care Conference: Caring For Kids and Those Who Care, Oct. 15. For parents, providers, and teachers. The keynote session addresses the power of the media on our culture and how the forces that drive media content don’t always have the best interest of our families and communities in mind. - Morris Pizza Ranch fundraiser: On Monday, October 17, all tips and 10% of the receipts between 5 pm and 8 pm will go to Habitat for Humanity.
- Help identify veterans’ addresses! On Tuesday afternoon on November 8th the Morris School District will be hosting a veteran’s appreciation event for area veterans. If you have the address of a veteran where you would like an invitation sent, please email the address to prinkenb@morris.k12.mn.us or rink@fedtel.net. Thank you to all who help us put together our veteran data base.
- Halloween Party benefit for Courage Cottage on Saturday night, Oct. 29, at Old Number One. Costume contests, karaoke, lots of fun! $5 cover charge includes one free beverage. Age limit: 18 & over.
- FREE Adult Basic Computer classes (navigation, using mouse & Windows & internet, etc.) . Wednesdays, 2-4PM. Call Morris Area Community Education, 589-4394, for details.
- The Cougar Volleyball team is hosting the annual Dig Pink matches this Saturday, Oct. 8 vs. Martin Luther at 1 p.m. and Jamestown College (JV) at 3 p.m. at the Regional Fitness Center. See www.side-out.org to make a donation for cancer therapy research! Let’s work together to reach our goal of $1,000 for the Side-Out Foundation.
- FREE films in Spanish (English subtitles) will be shown at Morris Theatre, thanks to UMM’s 2011 Festival of Spanish Language Cinema. The films will be shown at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the following Sundays this fall.

- FREE: A Popcorn Concert (different student music groups perform and popcorn is provided at a small cost) will be held on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7:30p.m. in the UMM Student’s Center Oyate Hall.
- Thursday, October 20, Noon-1pm, Lunch Bunch featuring “An American Girl” at the Morris Public Library meeting room. Kindergarten through 3rd graders are invited to bring their sack lunch and enjoy stories, games and crafts. Followed by a Movie Matinee at 1 pm: “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl”. Both events are free. Please pre-register at 589-1634.
